Liz didn't know what to say. Most of the stuff Annie was expressing, the girl had expressed to her already in one form or another and the truth was, she didn't blame Annie for all those thoughts.

To her credit, Liz didn't give up either. Had it been a year ago, her natural response would have been to bow out of the picture but she had tried that and it wasn't successful.
